Christian introduced to the teachers his ambition to “make places and systems fit for people,” illustrating his point with examples from the works of his company UiWE. He nudged the teachers to re-imagine the Kai Tak River to be a public education space.

Christian then gave the participants an assignment: to take pictures of three places along the Kai Tak River where you think has potential to be used as or remade into an education space. Lok Sin Tong Wong Chung Ming Secondary School also generously opened their school grounds and rooftops to the workshop participants so that they can have a good view of all the potential education spaces along the Kai Tak River.

The first workshop ended with David’s presentation on his works. Participants can now view and download the presentation on the Resources site.

November 14, 2011 in Alessandro Carboni, News, Workshops
Alessandro Carboni is an Italian multidisciplinary artist and teacher who divides his efforts between different art disciplines. He has worked on several projects in Hong Kong since 2007, and is very knowledgeable about the developments along the Kai Tak River and near the old Kai Tak Airport.
During his two-week visit in October 2011, Carboni divided his time between teaching and research. As part of the Kai Tak River Green Corridor Public Education Project, Carboni conducted two workshops for twenty teachers teaching in primary and secondary schools along the Kai Tak River in Wong Tai Sin and San Po Kong. His workshop, titled “Methodology as Performance Practice: an interdisciplinary workshop on creativity and research strategies,” guided teachers to create artwork based on social research. Through discussions and hands-on exercises, Carboni taught the teachers a simple four-step strategy that can help them and their students extract the essence of objective realities, develop a creative and subjective interpretation, and express it in an artistic form.
Carboni also gave guest lectures to students at the Chinese University Fine Arts Department, and led workshops for students in the Chinese University Architecture Department.
Apart from teaching, Carboni also enriched his research on Kai Tak River and its relationship with the surrounding human landscape. In 2008, for his project What Burns Never Returns, Carboni choreographed a movement piece that was performed at the old Kai Tak Airport. He returned in 2009 to research on the Kai Tak River and Nga Tsin Wai Village. Inspired by the history of salt mining around Nga Tsin Wai Village and the disappearing historical landmarks in the neighborhood, Carboni staged a performance around Nga Tsin Wai Village with 500kg of sea salt.
As a continuation of the previous projects, Carboni recorded the soundscape of the bustling neighborhood along the Kai Tak River. He also conducted interviews with artists and long-term residences of the neighborhood, further exploring how the urban landscape, human interactions and historical background of Kai Tak River are interwoven. Carboni plans to return to Hong Kong in mid-2012 to continue his project.
On Monday Oct 31, Carboni was interviewed by Phil Whelan on the on RTHK Radio 3 daily radio show “Morning Brew.” Click here for the recording of the interview.
To contact Alessandro Carboni, email him at info@alessandrocarboni.org.

Alessandro holds the first three hours of his workshop "Methodology as Performance Practice: An Interdisciplinary Workshop on Creativity and Research Strategies" at the Culture Factory in San Po Kong.

After an hour of introductory workshop at the Culture Factory, Alessandro leads all workshop participants on some practical exercises along the Kai Tak River.

Afterwards, the group goes into Nga Tsin Wai Village, where the teachers explore and sketch their observations for about 15 minutes.

The river is often linked to vital vessel on a voyage driven by relationship between water, human and ‘Green’. When considering the desirable future of the Kai Tak River, we must pay more attention on this inseparable relations. The purpose of the art project will be directed to transform parts of the Kai Tak River into ‘Green Vessel’ forwarding towards 2025 when 48 countries on the Earth are projected to suffer from serious situation of water shortage. As a result of climate change and the increase of the world population, water shortage will be accelerated here and there on the earth, our water planet. Standing on conviction that all water is flowing into oneness, ‘Green Vessel for 2025’ must be realized as a new trial for collaborating towards an ecologically sustainable future.
What is the most important for ‘Green Vessel for 2025’ might be about what to load onto the vessel. I call these loads ‘Green Boxes’ packed fully with thoughts, ideas and wishes of peoples on forthcoming appearance of the Kai Tak River. Especially Green Boxes produced by community people, spending daily life along with the river, must be the greatest gifts for the river. And now with my pleasure I can mention three kinds of ‘Green Boxes’ considering relations between water, human and ‘Green’.
1) Green Box-water with warning on water shortage and appeal for water conservation
2) Green Box-plants with ‘Green’ which you’d like to plant in/along the river
3) Green Box-you with active expression on relations between water and you
First if all, imagine 2025 A.D. and think of what and how to carry in days after 14 years by yourself. Sympathized with your walk along the river and your watchful eye, I can send you the following questions;
1) From where to where is water under your feet flowing now?
2) Which parts of the river do you hope to keep for 2025?
3) Which kinds of ‘Green’ can you nurse towards 2025?
I invite you to be just a crew of ‘Green Vessel for 2025’. Crews, load your Green Boxes!
